A Celebration of Cheese in North Carolina
The American Southeast is not an area traditionally associated with cheese, but small artisan makers like Round Mountain Creamery and Yellow Branch Cheese and Pottery are working hard to change that assumption. Find them both on the first-ever Western North Carolina Cheese Trail, along with 8 others.
While the guide doesn’t yet rival the 44-stop Vermont Cheese Trail, it’s a great start, said an organizer, Jennifer Perkins of Looking Glass Creamery in Fairview, Stop 5 along the trail. “People are surprised to learn that not only is North Carolina the leader in the South in terms of artisan cheesemakers, with about 50 statewide, 20 of them are in the mountains,” she said.
