Not too long ago, you simply had to take a package label's word on where your beer or cheese came from. Now, amazingly, science has developed ways of answering these questions. Let's drink (and eat) to new discoveries!
Which means, amazingly, that you can tell where something came from by checking its isotope ratios and comparing it with that worldwide isotope map. This could work for almost anything, from whiskey and cheese to dismembered body parts and kilos of cocaine, once the isoscape is sufficiently detailed. Think of it as terroir, on the atomic level.
