The Winslow's Home Grilled Cheese
Esquire is joining the fun of grilled-cheese month by tasting grilled cheeses from all over the country and featuring the best on their Eat Like a Man blog. Today's offering: the grilled cheese from Winslow's Home in St. Louis, a combination of fontina and aged white cheddar with a bit of thyme butter. The sandwich scores high marks in all of Eat Like a Man's categories: cheese, texture, originality, and "intangible grilled-cheese essence."
Chef Cary McDowell knows better than to muddle up a great grilled cheese with add-ons like bacon or pickles or — gasp! — out-of-season tomatoes. A grilled cheese sandwich is comfort food at its finest, and McDowell's soothes like a warm childhood blanket.
