Flavored Simple Syrup

Leigh Belanger
Simple syrup is just that: an easy way to add a sweet layer of flavor to any cold drink, sans the sticky puddle at the bottom of your glass. Once you’re comfortable with the general method, start experiment- ing with different herbs and aromatics. The 1 cup water:1 cup sugar ratio generally calls for ¼ cup herbs (3 to 5 stems) and will yield 1¼ cups of liquid.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 to 5 stems herbs

Instructions

  • Combine 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar in a small saucepan, and bring to a simmer over medium-low heat, stirring to help dissolve the sugar.
  • Add whatever herbs you’re using for your drinks, and simmer together for 1 to 3 minutes.
  • Remove from heat, let cool for about 10 minutes, and strain, discarding the herbs. Store in a sealed glass jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
