Our 9 Favorite Cheese Spreaders

It’s that time of year again: the holidays. And with the holidays come endless amounts of holiday parties, whether you like them or not. One perk to these holiday parties, though, is cheese plates. If there’s a dinner party, there’s likely to be a cheese plate.

What can make or break a cheese plate is its arrangement. A hastily thrown-together cheese plate is definitely noticeable, and highly unappealing. But there’s an element that can help accentuate a beautiful cheese plate, and is many ways the icing on the cake of cheese plates: cheese spreaders.

Cheese spreaders may seem useless, but they are actually quite important. Ever tried spreading cheese with a regular knife? Unless the cheese is incredibly soft, this can be quite a challenge. And an aesthetically pleasing cheese spreader can improve even the worst of cheese plates. But what makes for an aesthetically pleasing cheese spreader? Here are nine of our favorites.

9. The Very Obviously Labeled Cheese Spreader

Sometimes it’s the simple things that win us over. This vintage cheese spreader, hand stamped to say “fromage,” will grace your cheeseboard and remind everyone of why they came to the party in the first place.

8. The Tiny Grazing Elephant Cheese Spreader

I’m probably biased towards this particular spreader because it reminds me of two of my favorite things: elephants and the opening scene of The Lion King. But the craftsmanship of this handle is beautiful. I would love to stare admiringly at this while nibbling on Brie. Or mozzarella. Or Gouda. Really any type of cheese.

7. The Categorized Cheese Spreader

This isn’t very different from our #9 cheese spreader, but at least these tell you what type of cheese you’re spreading. Or they tell you how to organize your cheese plate, giving you one less thing to worry about this holiday season.

6. The Autumn Abundance Cheese Spreader

Between the pumpkins and the gorgeous color of the leaves, autumn might be the most beautiful time of the year, and these spreaders do a great job of highlighting the season. They are the perfect complement to all parties that happen between Labor Day and Thanksgiving.

5. The Cheese Spreader that Reminds You of Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and cheese is the most important food of any meal; ergo, breakfast cheese spreaders! Spread the breakfast love while you spread cheese or dip at your next party.

4. The Owl Tree Cheese Spreader

These are arguably the most aesthetically pleasing of the bunch. The tree creates a perfect perch for these beautifully crafted owls to sit while they wait for you to use them. Granted, it can give you the feeling that they’re watching you eat your cheese, and create a Big Brother–esque feel, but that could fit perfectly at a party with a creepier theme (like a Halloween party, or a party where you had to invite a bunch of people you don’t actually like).

3. The Cheese Spreader that Gives You Ideas on Other Stuff to Spread

Maybe these are a bit corny, but I’ve always had a soft spot for puns. Because of that, being reminded to spread joy and love while spreading cheese seems great (or should I say grate?). Plus, we all could benefit from being reminded to do this stuff once and a while, and those reminders pack the biggest punch when they come from the most unlikely places.

2. The Mean Girls Cheese Spreader

Okay, I guess this is technically a butter spreader. But it’s too good to not put on here! It asks the important question that we’re all thinking. Plus, it’s a reference to one of the best lines in Mean Girls. Overall, it’s a win-win situation.

1. The Sweet Dreams Cheese Spreader

I openly laughed out loud when I first saw these, mainly because the reference is so random. Who thinks of Eurythmics songs while eating cheese? Add that to the fact that all of the lyrics are turned into cheese puns, and you have a truly hilarious set of spreaders sure to please anyone who looks closely at your cheese plate.

Amanda Doughty

Amanda Doughty considers cheese to be an essential part of her upbringing, as her family owns Anthony's Italian Kitchen, an Italian restaurant in Portland, Maine. She studied creative writing at Emerson, where she was considered an outcast for refusing to touch the disgusting pizza in the Dining Hall. She admits that is a bit of a food snob, especially when it comes to pizza and cheese.
