Have you ever walked around the grocery store and stumbled upon a food item that pairs two seemingly unrelated flavors? You may have encountered a Frankenfood. Frankenfoods are the mash up of two foods to create something new, whether they are tasty or not is a whole other matter.
Doritos + Mountain Dew = Dewitos
Two junk foods collide in this new Frankenfood. As Stephen Colbert amusingly notes, this new beverage tastes, “like orange with a nacho cheese aftertaste.” Who couldn’t love that? Though it is currently only available select colleges across the US, soon it will be for sale at a store near you.
Lobster + Macaroni + Everything but the kitchen sink= Angry Ralph’s Lobster Mac and Cheese
Lobster macaroni is a delicious and popular dish that is decadent and gooey. That was true until Ralph Mazzocchi, chef-owner of Ralph’s in Lancaster, decided to shake things up a bit. The new mac and cheese includes lobster, white chocolate, whiskey, tomatoes, white wine, sharp cheddar and – wait for it – Cheetos. it goes for $16 and is actually quite popular.
Egg Roll + Lamb + Nacho Cheese = Gyro Bites
These egg rolls might look normal but they are not, they are stuffed with lamb, cabbage, nacho cheese, and tzatziki sauce and wrapped in a pita-egg roll wrapper.
Baked Apple + Goat Cheese + Scrambled Eggs = The Apple That Went to Brunch
Baked apples are a classic fall food, but whether they can be successfully incorporated into brunch is still a question. This dish includes a Granny Smith apple, scrambled eggs, goat cheese, bacon, brown sugar, oatmeal, and caramel. You decide if this sweet and savory dish will work.
Blue Cheese + Cheesecake + Buffalo Sauce = Buffalo Bobs
These nice little balls look like a bar version of cake pops, until you bite into them. Buffalo Bobs include blue cheese cheesecake, buffalo sauce, panko bread crumbs, and chicken seasonings all on a celery stick. Could this be the next delicious dive appetizer?
Chicago-Style Pizza + Hot Dogs + Pickles = The Windy City
Pizza is frequently the foundation for Frankenfoods because it is so easy to dress up but this version might take the cake. Try this deep dish dough topped with poppy seeds, cheese, hot dogs, relish, onion, tomatoes, peppers, mustard, and pickles. Let’s just be thankful it doesn’t actually have cake in it.
