The Grilled Cheese Invitational Says Its Goodbyes

This year’s Grilled Cheese Invitational, a bread, butter, and cheese-focused cook-off competition, was the final to ever take place in downtown LA (or anywhere, for that matter). If you didn’t get a chance to attend the event, this writeup from Neon Tommy has all the details — from the craziest sandwiches served (ahem, swiss cheese, Nutella, peanut butter crunch, raspberry jam, grilled sweet whole wheat bread and powdered sugar), and the special secondary competition which pitted all the past winners (aka Grilled Cheese Champions) against one another for a final battle.

“We won the war on curds and whey,” Walker told Los Angeles Magazine. “There are national restaurant chains dedicated to grilled cheese. There’s a motorcade of grilled cheese trucks around the country. When we started this, grilled cheese was on the kids’ menu and the only people doing events with it were us and Campanile. Now, it’s taken its rightful place in the forefront of American sandwiches.”
