Cheese Goals: Perfect Your Pull

We’ve all heard how important it is to get your daily stretches in—but I’ve learned that a great grilled cheese stretch is also beneficial to one’s emotional well-being. As the chick behind Grilled Cheese Social, the world’s largest grilled cheese blog, I’ve tested many methods over the years—here’s how to get it right.

The most important part of achieving that picture-perfect, ooey-gooey grilled cheese pull is choosing the correct cheese blend. Pick one or more of the most melt-tastic semi-soft cheeses like young cheddar, mozzarella, muenster, young gouda, or pepper Jack. Armed with the right blend, cook the sandwich using your preferred method until the outside of the bread is crispy and golden brown and the cheese has melted throughout. When it’s all finished, pull your sandwich off the griddle and let it sit for a minute to allow the cheese to seize back up. This rest time will bring your cheese to the perfect stretchable elasticity.

Now here’s where the magic happens: Use a serrated knife to cut through the bread on one side, then flip the sandwich and cut through the bread on the other side—don’t cut through the cheese! Leaving the cheese intact gives you a mouthwatering pull that is just oh-so-fun to show off on Instagram.
