In Queso You Missed It: April 4th

It’s Easter Sunday and the beginning of National Grilled Cheese Month, so we’ll be celebrating in the only way that makes sense: with this Easter Dinner Grilled Cheese. Filled with ham, fresh chèvre, asparagus, and apricot jam, this melty sandwich practically screams spring. It’s the best way to celebrate the holiday weekend in a low-key-yet-still-delicious way.

In other cheese news:

  • Speaking of grilled cheese: Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Co. is hosting a Grilled Cheese Cook-Off this month. The event features chefs and restaurateurs who will each create their unique melty recipes using Point Reyes cheeses. Attendees get to follow along and enjoy those delicious wedges from home. Plus: A portion of proceeds go to Help Kitchen, which provides food security to those in need. Get your tickets here.
  • Cheesemakers have been on the frontlines since the start of the pandemic, and now they’re part of the battle toward herd (or should we say curd?) immunity. Wisconsin-based companies like Sargento Foods and Organic Valley have been doing their part to administer vaccines to surrounding rural communities in an effort to ease access for everyone.
  • The Vermont Cheesemakers’ Festival has been cancelled for the second year in a row due to the pandemic. “This was not an easy decision and we very much hope to be back on course as normal in 2022,” the festival announced on its Facebook page. In the meantime, folks can take part in “The Hunt,” a scavenger hunt-style adventure hosted by the festival that guides tourists to visit cheesemakers and take part in other activities in the Green Mountain State.
  • Gouda fans, rejoice: Old Amsterdam—the beloved producer of aged Gouda in Holland—is debuting two new flavors: Old Amsterdam Mild and Old Amsterdam Reserve. These new wheels join the iconic lineup of Old Amsterdam Classic and Old Amsterdam Goat.
  • A group of French monks in lockdown just sold a whole lot of cheese in very little time. The Cîteaux Abbey monks had been bunking up with 4,000 wheels of cheese since the pandemic halted their usual tourism and restaurant sales, but they recently put some on sale through a special website partnership—and sold over 4,000 pounds of it in 24 hours. Now they’ve got a little more elbow room.
  • Love cheese but need more veggies? These new cheese alternatives from Grounded Food Co. are created from cauliflower and hemp seeds, making them nutrient-dense with flavors that emulate fresh chèvre, cream cheese, and American cheese sauce.
  • Somerdale International debuted a limited-edition aged cheddar, Champion Cheddar, to coincide with the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games. This British-made cheese is made specifically for the U.S. market and represents “the gold medal standard for American consumers,” according to its website.
  • Spring is here—and so is all of its glorious fresh produce. If you’re looking for cheesy recipe ideas that mirror all the joyous and bright feelings of the season, we’ve got some ideas for every meal of the day. Check out our roundup here.
  • Psst…Today’s the last day to enter Ambrosi’s Spring Giveaway. If you haven’t already, enter your name for a chance to win the Ultimate Italian Prize Pack here.
